Tru-Tension BananaSlip Chain Lube review

I would say I’m good at looking after my chain and sprockets. I always try to keep the chain tensioned adequately, and I regularly clean and apply lube, sometimes overly keen leaving excess fling everywhere. Currently, I am using Tru-Tension BananaSlip chain lube so here are my thoughts.

For the record I am running Genuine Suzuki Sprockets, with a DID X-Ring chain. I usually clean and lube the chain whenever I wash the bike, if not every other week. Occasionally longer in which case, I’ll moisten up the chain with fresh lubricant.

BananaSlip comes in the form of dry chain lube or wax, in an aerosol can. I have been using the lube as opposed to the wax. I prefer a wet lube as I ride in all weather conditions, and wet provides more resistance to being washed off in the rain than it’s the dry counterpart.

Tru-Tension Banana Slip actually smells like bananas!

One thing that always pains me is dirty wheels. Some chain lubes and other chain oiling techniques can be tricky to apply and quite messy. It’s easy to apply excess lube which makes a real mess after getting flung off. The amount of times I have seen splatter EVERYWHERE from inaccurate spraying is worrying. Note to self, apply less.

Bananaslip does have good anti-fling properties; I have been running it in the past few weeks with no massive issues over the back wheel. You will naturally get some fling but nothing to worry about. The sticky nature of the lube which prevents it from flinging does mean that some foreign particles are picked up and stick to the chain. This can cause excessive wear to driveline components so a good cleansing routine is essential.

The narrow spray atomizer on the can prevent oversprays which keeps things neat and tidy, and it also allows the can be used upside down, which helps to make sure all angles are covered.

Scented like banana, it does fill the garage with a nice aroma, which is a welcome change from petrol and coffee which is the norm.

Over the past few weeks, the weather has been very grim, lots of rain and cold temperatures and to add insult to injury the roads have been salted a lot.

Overall I’m not completely convinced by it. It’s really sticky, which is good with respect to not flinging over your tyre and wheel makes cleaning the bike easier. BUT being sticky it has high pick-up which does mean cleaning the chain more often, I suppose some compromise is required. It does smell of bananas, which is a nice touch, but I wouldn’t buy Tru-Tension BananaSlip purely because of that. Personally, the high pick up outweighed the benefits of the anti-fling of the chain lube, I didn’t like seeing the build-up of ‘Grinding paste’ which accumulated.
